FAQs

How are organic fertilizer and soil amendment products regulated?

In the United States (U.S.), the United States Department of Agriculture National Organic Program (NOP) sets regulatory standards for organically produced food and fiber products. To be certified by the NOP, food and fiber producers are required to apply input materials, such as fertilizer and soil amendment, which meet NOP organic standards.

What is the Organic Materials Review Institute?

The Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) reviews and verifies fertilizer and soil amendment products that are compliant with NOP standards. OMRI Listed® products can display the OMRI seal once approved. The type and cost of registration requirements varies according to product specifications such as total ingredients, ingredient suppliers and manufacturers, and manufacturing processes.

What is the CDFA Organic Input Material Program?

The California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) Organic Input Material (OIM) Program registers fertilizer and soil amendment products that are compliant with NOP standards as well as the California Fertilizing Materials Law. CDFA OIM registered products can be marketed in the state of California as 'organic'. The type and cost of registration requirements varies according to product specifications such as total ingredients, ingredient suppliers and manufacturers, and manufacturing processes.
